Asbestos was a once-popular insulating material and flame retardant that was applied as a spray to a wide variety of commercial and public buildings decades ago. However, it was determined to be a dangerous carcinogen and production was banned in the US back in 1978. Unfortunately, it is still present in a large number of buildings, and asbestos removal is a major priority in many communities across the country.
Asbestos removal is a specialty of Patriots Environmental Corp. In fact, we’re a Central New England asbestos removal specialist, licensed to provide asbestos removal services in Massachusetts, Rhode Island, New Hampshire and Connecticut.
Asbestos removal is critical because asbestos can still pose a risk to people depending on how and where it was applied. Some methods of applying asbestos, particularly flocking, allow asbestos fibers to gradually drop off into the air. Asbestos poses hazards to maintenance personnel who have to drill holes in walls for installation of cables or pipes. Even if the workers are protected, such maintenance operation may release fibers into the air, which may be inhaled by others. Asbestos removal in areas where asbestos is present often have to follow stringent procedures.
If asbestos removal is going to be done when occupants are still present in a building, it’s usually necessary to temporarily relocate some of them from areas that might be affected by the asbestos removal process. Typically, the part of the building undergoing asbestos removal has to be sealed off to prevent asbestos contamination of other areas. Methods of sealing off an area often include using polyethylene film, duct tape and negative air pressure machines which are fitted with HEPA filters. The concept being that the contained area is pulling in fresh air, preventing asbestos fibers from escaping out into the surrounding environment.
